Power of the Governor

Powers of Governor

  • The powers of the Governor are generally similar to the powers of the President at the Centre. The main difference between the powers of both is that the Governor does not have diplomatic, military or emergency powers.
  • (1) Executive Powers

  • According to Article 154 (1), the executive power of the State will be vested in the Governor and he will use it according to the Constitution by himself or by his subordinate officers.
  • Administration of the Government - All executive- work is done in the name of the Governor.
  • The Governor is formally named in all the functions of the State Government.
  • He makes rules regarding the work of the State Government.
  • The Governor appoints the Chief Minister and on the advice of the Chief Minister appoints other members of the Council of Ministers. (Article 164 (i)).
  • Each Minister of the State government takes office after the Governor's pleasure.
  • He appoints The Advocate General, members of the State Public Service Commission, but the Governor cannot remove the members of the State Public Service Commission Only the President can remove them.
